This would not be feasible for the entire free agency process, but for the top 10 free agents as determined by Yahoo or another rating service that is agreeable to the league, I think this would be more interesting and improve the pace of signings.
In essence, the top 10 free agents would be put up for sealed bids. All bids will be unsealed at the same time.
Managers would have to determine which player(s) they want to target and make the best bid possible. Bid quality will follow the current points system.
This would force managers to strategize carefully about who they want to target.
Ultimately, I think this is closer to how the actual league works instead of having an open auction where .35 point bid increases are made in the 23rd hour.
The moves made for role players will continue in the same way.

I like the idea of not being able to wait until the last minute to bid an extra 350k, and that goes on for a week.
What if we made a time limit once a FA gets the first bid? Say, make it 72 hours from the time of the first bid. Whoever has the highest bid at the end of 72 hours, claims the contract for the FA.

I'm not a fan of those last minute bids either, although I have put a few in, but having a time limit would disadvantage guys in different time zones, so I'm not sure that's the answer either.
Jon's idea is interesting but I don't think this tends to be much of an issue with the top free agents. Beattie usually just puts in his bid and takes it. It's more of an issue with the free agents whose value we tend to be unsure of.

I chose 72 hours because it would give time for all of us in different time zones a chance to check bids at least once every two days and not miss out.

But the 72 hours might expire while guys are sleeping in one time zone which gives the advantage to guys in other areas and they can still lodge last minute bids.

Can we make a limit to how many times someone bids? 72 hour limit and you can only bid 3 times on a player (kind of like the FA signing period).
